Walk on the Wild Side

Early in the morning after being awake for hours with insomnia, I decided to drive for just over an hour to photograph the sun rise in East London, the same place the deer roam free.

Yes this is colour

The sun didn’t quite break through the clouds. When it does at this location it’s absolutely marvellous.

This is one of my happy places. There are very few people and plenty of wildlife. It’s amazingly peaceful for a place surrounded by roads and housing estates. Just 10. minutes walk into the woods and you're greeted with wonder.

While out I joined up with a local group called Deer Aid who are on 24 hour call out for any issues related to the wildlife. I joined them for a call out to a deer that had been hit by a car and made its way into a farmers field.

The little doe had a broken spine and three broken legs due to the car accident. The car did not stop at the incident.

Unfortunately the little fallow deer doe had to be put down using a bolt gun. Its injuries were too severe to save.

This is something the volunteers at Deer Aid deal with on a daily basis. I do wish car drives would both slow down and pay more attention to what’s around them. Obviously there will still be accidents, but we really need to do more to limit our impact of native wildlife.

I helped move the deer off the farmers field into some hedgerow where nature will do its thing. It was a wake up call to all the beauty I see in that area. This is the other side of things including poaching and people allowing their dogs to chase the wildlife. I will be documenting more of the negative side of things in the future.

Back in the woods and I get cheered up but some wonderful young deer who were curious as to what I was and what I was doing there.

A deer running away with a lot of rope wrapped around its antlers. I’m hoping it makes its way off by itself.

Final shot of a doe ready to drink at a local pond.
