MY TOP SCIENCE FICTION MOVIES

Science fiction is by far my favourite movie genre. My personal favourite science fiction movies include a collection of visionary films that have pushed the boundaries of imagination, technology, and storytelling.

Alien
Directed by: Ridley Scott

Released on 6 September 1979

Basic premise of the film: A woman ‘Ripley’ tells men how to survive an alien encounter, they don’t listen, they die and she escapes with her cat.

Blade Runner 2049
Directed by: Denis Villeneuve

Released on 5 October 2017

The film’s themes include existentialism, what it means to be human, and how to deal with existential dread while looking incredibly stylish. Staring Ryan Gosling who’s a replicant having an identity crisis.

The Matrix
Directed by: Lana and Lilly Wachowski

Released on 11 June 1999

Reality is overrated—just learn kung fu and dodge bullets if you ever suspect you're living in an evil simulation.

Alita: Battle Angel
Directed by: Robert Rodriguez

Released on 16 February 2019

A dystopian future with a wild mix of martial arts, cyborg upgrades, and a dash of melodrama that reminds us all: when life gives you robotic limbs, don’t just stand there—battle like you mean it!

Aliens
Directed by: James Cameron

Released on 29 August 1986

A very tired Ripley wakes up after a 57-year nap, only to find out the universe still can’t function without her. Gets dragged back into action because some not-so-bright people thought, “Hey, let’s colonize that creepy planet where all those killer aliens live! What could go wrong?”

Contact
Directed by: Robert Zemeckis

Released on 26 September 1997

Jodie Foster plays a brilliant scientist who spends years listening to space radio static, only to finally get an intergalactic "You up?" message from aliens. They send her blueprints for a ridiculously complex space chair—which she builds, of course—because when aliens invite you over, you don't say no.

RoboCop
Directed by: Paul Verhoeven

Released on 5 February 1988

A cop gets turned into a bulletproof vending machine with a badge after some criminals turn him into Swiss cheese. Now part-man, part-machine, he’s Detroit’s ultimate crime-fighter—programmed to protect and serve, but mostly just blow stuff up.

The Fifth Element
Directed by: Luc Besson

Released on 6 June 1997

Come on, who doesn’t want to see Bruce Willis save the world while wearing a dirty tank top?

Rogue One
Directed by: Gareth Edwards

Released on 13 December 2016

It’s a heist movie, but instead of robbing a bank, they’re stealing the galaxy’s most valuable USB drive.

The Terminator
Directed by: James Cameron

Released on 11 January 1985

Basically a story about how humanity’s brilliant idea to let machines do everything backfires—big time. Spoiler: humanity’s survival depends on the one lesson we all learned—don’t mess with Sarah Connor.

Ex Machina
Directed by: Alex Garland

Released on 21 January 2015

Basically, don’t trust a robot who can flirt with you, and maybe don't hang out with billionaires who want you to "test" their artificial girlfriends.

The Martian
Directed by: Ridley Scott

Released on 30 September 2015

If you ever find yourself on Mars, make sure you have plenty of poop and lots of potatoes and of course all will be OK.
